1-First semester – Compulsory Courses

  1. Advanced Fluid mechanics

Continuity equation, velocity potential and stream functions, flow net, source, sink, circulation and vorticity, Euler’s equation of motion, Bernoulli’s equation for a real fluid, momentum equation, moment of momentum equation, applications, Navier-Stocke’s equations and its applications, boundary layer equations, water hummer and its effects, surge tanks, pressure relief valves, analysis of free surface flow problems.

  1. Advanced mathematics

Introduction, review of first, second and higher differential equations, solution of simultaneous equations, Taylor series, Fourier series, power series, Partial differential equations, Numerical integration and differentiation, Least squares method for linear, nonlinear and multiple linear, polynomial equations, conformal mapping techniques, practical applications using computer.

  1. Advanced applied Hydrology

Rainfall-runoff relation, unit hydrographs and S-curve hydrograph analysis, instantaneous unit hydrographs-linear and non-linear models, frequency analysis-normal distribution,  gamble-person distributions, applications to hydrographic extremes-floods and droughts, flood control measures, flood forecasting techniques, flood routing-river routing and reservoir routing methods, storage, poundage, and flow duration curves.

2-Second semester – Compulsory Courses

2.1      Advanced hydraulic Structures

Theory and design of hydraulic structures, different types of dams, regulators, culverts, drops, chutes, spillways and energy dissipaters, case studies. Reservoir regulation and control, reservoir sedimentation and its control, water resources planning.

2.2      Rivers pollutions

Point sources of pollution, Non-Point sources, Causes,  Transport and chemical reactions of water pollutants, Thermal pollution, sampling and testing ( physical, biological , chemical ), control of pollution, Pollution loads and surface water quality, Modeling water quality in the river, Spatial distribution of persistent organic pollutants in the surface water of the River

2.3      Sediment transport

Nature of sedimentation problems-erosion, sediment transport and deposition, mechanics of sediment transportation-hydraulics, sediment discharge, sediment in river and pipes, sediment measure techniques-valley deposits, air borne sediments, laboratory  procedures sediment yield-erosion rate, sediment sources, sediment control-water shed area and reservoir.

2.4      Ground water and seepage

Fundamentals of ground water flow, velocity, permeability, Darcy law. General hydrodynamic equations, velocity potential. Two dimensional flow, stream functions, streamlines and equipotential lines, Laplace equation. The flow net, Confined flow problems, Solutions by analysis, graphical and analogue or numerical relaxation techniques. Dupuit theory for unconfined flow problems. Conformed mapping techniques, velocity hydrograph solutions, Seepage from canals and ditches, Seepage toward wells, fully penetrating and partially penetrating. Filter, types of filters,

3- Details and descriptions of the Elective Courses

3.1      Optimization

Modelling and model analysis. Loading application and loading measurements. Strain measurements and displacement measurements. Rotation and curvature measurements. Dynamic measurements. Data recording and data analysis. Calibration techniques. Scale effects.

3.2      Open channel flow

Basic concepts of fluid flow, critical flow conditions, hydraulic jump analysis, concepts of natural flow, design of stable channels, gradually varied flow and its analysis, channel in regimes, channel control, design of channel transitions, unsteady flow and flood wave.

3.3      Finite Elements

The Structure of Finite Element Methods, Discretization, General form of the finite element method, Various types of finite element methods, Incompressible flows, Navier-Stokes equations including heat transfer, Two-phase flow, Finite-element analysis of slow incompressible viscous fluid, Finite-element analysis of slow  compressible viscous fluid.

3.4      Advanced Statistical

Introduction to statistical processes and time series, elementary statistical procedures-definitions and computations, statistical principles and techniques-estimation of parameters, normalization, auto regression, auto correlation functions, modelling of hydrologic time series-auto regressive, moving average and auto regressive cum, moving average models, introduction to multivariate and disaggregation modelling.

3.5      Groundwater pollution control  

Groundwater Contaminants, Nonreactive Contaminant Transport in the Saturated Zone, Reactive Contaminant Transport in the Saturated Zone, Contaminant Transport in the Unsaturated Zone Theory and Modeling, Typical Groundwater Contaminants, Biodegradation, Evapotranspirative Cover Systems for Waste Containment, Groundwater Monitoring, Remediation of Contaminated Groundwater, Ex-Situ remediation Technology, In-Situ Remediation Technology, In-Situ Bioremediation
